Behold
“When my mother was suffering from Parkinson’s disease and a bit of dementia, she would often reach out her hands into the air. As if she was trying to catch something from heaven. A few years ago, when my father was dying, our family gathered around his bedside. When my mother reached for something in the air, I asked her what she was reaching out for and she replied, “Oh, the birds!” I knew then, my bird photographs were for my mother and father. About holding on and letting go. About the moment the bird flies away.” _From the interview of Barbara Bosworth at Magazine Gitz vol.6
For the Concord-based artist Barbara Bosworth, photography is a way to love nature and life and assure her existence. Bosworth’s book ‘Behold’ is composed of pictures of birds, trees, skies, and the earth that she observed from her window. Birds’ flapping resembles her parents’ souls and stars in the night sky embrace the secret of the universe. Transcending time and space and connecting the world, This book is a delicate handmade accordion book with photographs and poetry.
Fireflies
“As a photographer, I am interested in a long look. The meadow seemed right for that. I love slow, long looking. I’m sure it is why I am an 8x10 photographer. A long look.”_ Barbara Bosworth
Barbara Bosworth’s artist book, ‘Fireflies’ is a collection of images of fireflies from Barbara’s project, The Meadow. This book is made in conjunction with the exhibition ‘Heaven, Wind, Stars and Poems’ shown at Datz Museum of Art in Korea. 50 copies of handmade limited edition was published by Datz press after the exhibition.
Heaven, Wind, Stars, and Poems
“The night is clear. The Milky Way bright. A slight breeze reminds me I am moving through the universe. Every clear night of the summer my father would go out for a walk to look at the night sky. Many nights I would join him. We knew the North Star, and the Big Bear, but the rest became our own. At times we stood still for an hour or more to watch for shooting stars. We had no agenda. It was all about amazement at a sky full of stars.” _Barbara Bosworth
Barbara Bosworth’s photography beholding the universe and all its wonders paired with Dong-ju Yun’s poetry confessing his love for all dying things make up ‘Heaven, Wind, Stars and Poems.’ The work was featured at Datz Museum of Art from April to July in 2017. This book, published by Datz Press, conveys the separate but converging visions of these two artists on our finite existence in an infinite universe.
Sea of Clouds
“Do not blame me if I do talk to the clouds.”_Henry David Thoreau
Barbara Bosworth photographs nature with a large format camera, deeply exploring the relationship between nature and humans. For Bosworth, who has taken photos for more than 40 years, photography is an act of capturing things that are disappearing and a tool that allows her to reflect on life and death. Barbara Bosworth often flew to meet her mother, who was nearing the end of her life’s journey. The scenery above the clouds, seen through the small window of a plane, reminded her of heaven. Images taken with a large format 8×10 camera describes a place that does not exist in this world. This book, ‘Sea of Clouds’ is made as an accordion book, reminiscent of an endless sea of clouds.
Moonlight, for Rosemary
“When I last saw her, the moon was in its last quarter. Almost dark, not quite. We said, simply, see you. Now, like the moonlight, she lingers.” _Barbara Bosworth
Photographer Barbara Bosworth documented moonlight of many nights. In this book, she gathered these images and dedicated them to Rosemary, a friend of 40 years, who passed away in 2016.
